At first I liked the colored balloons, but when I saw the black-and-white ones, I did like that better. I think my brain has to do less switching ... like, "blue is the Betje character" and could just focus on the dialogue / exchange between characters.
Oooh I know just the Ezra Klein podcast you’re referring to! A helpful one for me. It’s interesting to think how/whether what you’re listening to today to try to understand this moment may influence something you create later on! We shall see! Thanks for sharing!
You mean the ‘Don’t believe him’, right? I found it SO helpful.
And yes, fascinating how the mind works, I wouldn’t be surprised if I read this post back in a few years and suddenly understand where the next project idea came from.
I love the coloured balloons, they make it easier for me to read and follow and IMHO make the whole page sing a happier note! Either way it is looking super! I’d love to hear about your process for longer form stuff, what software do you use, are you able to work in such a way that it is easy to refer back to previous pages? Xo
Thank you so much for your feedback and compliment.
I doubt I’m working in the most clever way, just figured out it’s much faster to create spreads in stead of single pages so I don’t have to swap colors as often. I’m working in Procreate and have created a pallette for stuff like hair and skin, but the more colors I add, the more overwhelming it gets. I stick all the pages in an InDesign file, so I can also eyedropper a color there and check the CMYK codes. I guess it’s all much easier than mixing paints until it matches!
That’s really interesting to read because I was thinking the exact opposite! For me white speech balloons are much clearer : they don’t interrupt my understanding of the text and they don’t compete with the colours of the drawings! Which just goes to show that there aren’t any right answers and you just need to do what YOU want to do! 😆 I always love reading your work, thank you for everything you do! As for podcasts, I love Ten Percent Happier, which helps keep me calm and sane in this age of anxiety!
I like the colored balloons but both work. Do what makes sense for your production schedule.
That’s a good point too!
I like them both! The colored ones give an extra nice pink, but your coloring holds up perfectly without that.
I like the color balloons!

I'm starting to suspect there's a reason pretty much every comic has white balloons :)

Yes! The Don’t Believe Him one. I have been thinking about it a lot! Good luck with the rest of your coloring!
I like the colored balloons. They make it clear who is talking and makes it feel like more of a conversation. Thanks for your wonderful work!
Thank you! I like the color coding too, so you don’t solely rely on the tails.

Cool thank you! I am feeling like I would like to do more than single panel things but didn’t have any clue how to start.
Oh cool, so it! I’d say: just start and solve issues as they arise. And we can always hop on a call if you feel you could use my help.
Betje, thank you! I’ll keep that in mind if I get stuck. xo

Ha! Yes I guess I have to make up my own mind.
I’ve read the book Ten percent happier, found it really helpful and enjoyable. Didn’t know there is a podcast, will check it out, thanks!
I felle that the comic is more “clear” with colored balloons (meaning is more accessible)
furthermore, i find the overall impression more beautiful
and since comics is an overall mixture of drawing / writing / readability and global aspect everything is important and worth paying attention to
furthermore, the choice of color can add complexity and meaning to the comic, the story – bringing depth to the characters
thus it is really interesting and worth doing
thank for your comics
they are great

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective Anne! I was worried that colored balloons are less inviting, that’s really hard to tell as the creator.
