In case you missed it, I went on a road trip to Italy and made a travelogue. While I was traveling I made sketches and I’m now finishing and posting them per day for paid subscribers. We’re about halfway through the trip and I made this one public as a reminder: upgrade to paid if you want to see all the comics in my archive.
If you’re thinking of doing a daily comic journal, a vacation is a great moment to start. You’ll have more time than usual, but more importantly: dumb things happen all the time.
I’m very pleased that I was able to tell this story in only four images. There’s always a risk of wanting to include all the funny bits and pieces and ending up not finishing the comic at all.
Here are some things I considered using, but decided to leave out:
We had been to a cute town called Bagolino:
On the way back, the navigation gave us a different route for no apparent reason. Once the road got bad, we saw a woman with a dog giving us the stink eye (the woman, not the dog). This made sense to us once we found out we had ignored the warning signs.
The reason we ignored the signs is that we’re Dutch and we don’t understand Italian, but also, if a road is closed in the Netherlands, there will be concrete blocks or a person forcing you to turn around. More likely both when it’s this dangerous to keep going. I’m not sure if that’s because we’re so stubborn or that we became so stubborn because of this.
I hope you enjoyed this little nugget about our trip! I’m putting together a booklet with all the comics I made during out vacation. It will be an add-on during the crowdfunding campaign of my book: 5500 Miles of Comics. It will launch really really soon, so sign up now to be notified if you haven’t already!
With love,
Oh yeh. Italian country roads are a white knuckle hoot. You should try the roads on Elba. They seem like they were designed by a 3yr old with a crayon and if you drive off any of the narrow roads you get to enjoy a nice drop into the sea!
OMG white knuckle hoot describes it well.I feel the stress that’s on all your faces in the car and how you managed to turn around with a sheer drop next to you....>I am impressed! I’m off to Crete soon and this really gets me in the mood😳🙈and the word potholes gets a whole new meaning...
