In my last email I talked about the time my hunger for fame blurred my sense of judgement. The good part of that story, is that I wrote some parenting advice! I usually stay away from this, as I’m not an expert myself (see figure 1.)
Figure 1.
… but there’s something that took me about a decade to see and I would have liked it if someone pointed this out sooner. It’s this: providing 24/7 entertainment is not in the job description of a parent or caretaker.
Who knew?! For years I thought I should make sure my children are always happy. And although I still rather see them smiling than grumpy, bored or fighting, I no longer intervene any time stuff happens.
When I make it my responsibility to fix all problems for them, not only do I wear myself out, I deprive them of the opportunity to find solutions themselves. When I finally had this light bulb moment, of course, I made a comic about it.
If you have small children around, I hope you now know you can drop the Play-Doh and read a book, at least for the five seconds you’re not desperately needed.
Talking about books!
All these comics are in the 254 page book I’m crowdfunding right now: 5500 Miles of Comics. We’re about $750 away from the funding goal with a little over a week to get there!
With love,
