Finding humor in climate change.
I keep thinking I will run out of ideas. Especially since the subject is just about the least funny thing I can think of. I’ve been making cartoons about climate change, live at events for three years now. Before every session, I’m nervous.
I start drawing before we get started, just to make sure I have something to show…
And then the session begins and my hand starts to move.
When someone says the mental health impact of a distaster is often overlooked…
… or shares how hard it is for farmers, that they no longer know what to expect of the weather.
… and that as temperatures rise, we need regulations for people who work outdoors.
As you can see, these drawings are really rough. I deliver around ten of these in a two to three hour session. Considering I also have to listen, come up with ideas and try things that don’t work, I only have a few minutes to draw each of them, so all I care about is that the idea comes across.
After the session, my client picks their favourites and I will finish those so they can share them with their audience. Here’s what that might look like:
So how do I come up with ideas? I’ll share some thoughts on that below with my paid subscribers using this cartoon as an example. And I’ll share a 3 minute video of the whole session, where you can see how I work.
