Today, on Earth Day, I hope you get to enjoy nature. Plant something, toss some seeds around, do a barefoot dance on the grass! Then maybe, if you didn’t fall asleep with the sun on your face, read and share some comics about climate action.
In 2020, I was asked to make comics for COP26. It’s when I started to learn what climate change means, not just for the future but now, especially for communities in the global south. I started to panic and didn’t know what little old me could do…
I’ve always been conscious about the environment.
Any time news about climate change freaked me out, I changed something about my behavior. Whenever I adopted a new habit, I felt a bit better, for a short while.
Until eventually, quite recently, I started to see the extent of our problems…
… and went into full on panic mode.
Katharine Hayhoe’s book ‘Saving Us’ saved me from my cynicism and convinced me of the importance of conversations. I wasn’t talking about climate change, because I felt I wasn’t doing enough myself.
Hayhoe’s book helped me see that nobody’s perfect, but we all have a part to play. It starts with acknowledging there’s a serious problem and coming together to find solutions.
That’s when I understood that as a comic artist, I can play my role as part of communal efforts. So, I started making comics about other people’s climate actions.
And now… (I’m all giddy writing this): the next person I will interview is Katherine Hayhoe herself! I can’t wait to make a comic about her!
Will any of these comics save the earth?
Definitely not. But it might inspire others to do their part, even if…
some things never change.
With love,
That's exciting! Congrats 👏
