I did another Cartoonathon last week. This time, it was about humanitarian work in urban areas. Traditionally, organizations like the Red Cross Red Crescent were mostly working in rural areas, but this is changing as the word is urbanising. This humanitarian aid comes with its own challenges.
For example heatwaves are often a lot worse in cities. The IPCC rapport is predicting heatwaves to happen more frequently, in more places and with hotter temperatures. The only upside about heatwaves is that they’re pretty predictable. Here’s a draft I made about this.
During a Cartoonathon I make 4-6 of these drafts and my clients (Climate Center and the RCRC) pick 2 favorites that I finish. These are the cartoons they picked:
This one might need some context. As farming becomes more difficult (or impossible) due to draughts or floods, people often take to the cities in search of jobs. These people end up on the bottom of the social ladder, often in what they call ‘informal settlements’ (or shacks).
When disaster hits, for example a pandemic, it’s nearly impossible to reach those people and that’s why they’re the most at risk.
I’m curious to know if you understand the one above. Let me know!
I know these comics are not very fun. These are very heavy subjects and the work for Climate Center has not left me unchanged. I’m working on a longer piece to show how it changed my views, but it is a lot more challenging than simply recording something funny my kid said. That said, I will also continue to do that, because we need lighthearted humor more than ever.
In the mean time, always feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns. Just hit the reply button and type away!
With love,
Hi Betje
I really like how you’re moved out to make important social comments in your work now. Things that make people think. These are great as were the ones you did for COP26 - really powerful visuals with not many words. And I can imagine working on something like this it makes you research and it stays with you. More please but also fun pics about you and the kids on your fiets! 👍😘👍
